COFACE is the Confederation of Family Organisations in Europe. Founded in 1958, it is the link between family organisations and the European Union. COFACE strives to promote the family dimension in European Community policies. 56 family organisations from 20 EU member states are members of COFACE (2008) and the ICA is the Irish member.
COFACE lobbies the European institutions, in particular the European Commission, The European Parliment, the Council of Ministers and the European Economic and Social Committee.
COFACE promotes family policy in 3 ways:

1. As spokesperson for family organisations, it liaises with the European authorities in all sectors relating to the rights and interests of families.

2. It informs national organisations of developments in the European Union, and encourages greater awareness of the Community dimension.

3. It organises exchanges of ideas and experiences as well as mutual aid between family organisations in different countries.

As the only Irish organisation in COFACE the ICA has an important European platform on which raise issues, a direct voice in Europe.
Each organisation from the EU member states sends representatives to the five COFACE Working Groups (WG).

1. WG 1  Social and Family Policy
2. WG 2 Inclusive policies for Disabled people
3. WG 3  Consumer and Health
4. WG 4  Education and New Technologies
5. WG 5  Exchange of information and experiences: Mutual learning and capacity building between member organisations.
Participation in COFACE offers the ICA an opportunity to development our Advocacy work and to be part of a European wide shaping of policies.
Working groups meet twice a year and members are also expected to contribute to policy development between meetings. There is also an annual COFACE General Assembly.

ICA representation:
Anne Marie Dennison, National President
Liz Wall, substitute
John O’Callaghan Chief Executive also attends where required.
