ICA’s own Maureen Igoe crowned 2025 National Brown Bread Baking Competition WINNER

Congratulations to Maureen Igoe this year’s winner of the National Brown Bread Baking Competition sponsored by Euronics and in association with the NPA and ICA.

We are thrilled to congratulate Maureen Igoe of Bonniconlon Guild, Mayo Federation, on her incredible win at the 2025 National Brown Bread Baking Competition, held during the National Ploughing Championships in Screggan, Co. Offaly.

Maureen’s journey to the national stage reflects her dedication and passion. She first triumphed in her Mayo Federation heat, before going on to secure victory at the ICA Final in An Grianán, Termonfeckin, Co. Louth, the heart of the Association’s training and heritage. With those wins under her belt, she proudly represented the ICA in the National Finals along with fellow members Helen Walker, Swords Guild, Dublin Federation and Kathy Bolger, Bree Guild, Wexford Federation, at the Ploughing Championships where her brown bread was crowned the very best in Ireland.

After more than 50 years of baking Maureen’s entry, infused with a drop of Guinness and a spoonful of treacle rose to the top. Her loaf was praised by judge, Eileen Brennan, herself a past winner in 1973, for being beautifully presented, perfectly cooked and uniquely flavoured.

As the winner Maureen takes home €5,000 along with a NEFF Slide and Hide oven.

This victory is more than just a prize; it is a testament to the strength of tradition and community in the Irish Countrywomen’s Association, who have long played a vital role in preserving and celebrating such traditions. From local kitchen tables to national competitions, ICA members have kept alive the art of brown bread baking, passing down recipes, techniques and pride for generations.

Achievements like Maureen’s remind us all of the ICA’s roots, fostering community, preserving cultural heritage and ensuring that home baking remains a living and evolving craft.

Once again, congratulations to Maureen, your achievement is an inspiration to all who cherish the rich tradition of Irish baking.
